Back then, the idea of establishing a British university branch campus in Ras Al Khaimah seemed ambitious to many. For us, it was a calculated commitment—rooted in a belief that quality education should be accessible beyond major cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Today, with more than 1,100 students, over 450 alumni, and a growing team of 65 staff including 25 highly qualified faculty members, the University of West London – Ras Al Khaimah Branch Campus (UWL RAK) stands as a testament to what vision, persistence, and community support can achieve.

The Early Days: Starting Small, Thinking Big

The initial phase of our journey was marked by determination, ambition, and a deep sense of purpose. With limited infrastructure, a lean academic team, and just a few classrooms nestled within the RAKEZ Business Zone, we focused on what truly mattered—laying a strong foundation. That meant enrolling capable, motivated students, bringing in committed faculty, and creating a learning environment where every individual felt valued and supported.

Our academic offerings began with core business and finance programmes such as the MBA, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance, and BA (Hons) Business Studies—courses that resonated with both fresh graduates and working professionals, addressing the growing demand for business acumen in the region’s rapidly expanding economy.

While our initial efforts focused on enrolling students from Ras Al Khaimah, we proactively extended our outreach to neighbouring emirates—and the response exceeded expectations. Students from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain began choosing UWL RAK, drawn by the promise of a reputable UK degree at a more accessible cost, without sacrificing academic quality. This momentum sent a strong signal: Ras Al Khaimah was emerging as a credible hub for higher education. As our graduates found success and shared their stories, our reputation grew—organically and rapidly. Today, our student body reflects that reach: around 45% hail from Sharjah, 30% from Dubai, and the rest from other emirates across the UAE.

A Turning Point: The Move to RAKEZ Academic Zone

The year 2020 marked a pivotal moment in our journey with the move to our new campus in the RAKEZ Academic Zone. This wasn’t just a change of address—it was a defining leap forward. The upgraded facilities brought a new level of academic rigor and student experience, with modern classrooms, purpose-built labs, enhanced student services, and a stronger institutional presence that signalled long-term commitment.

Alongside the move, we expanded our academic offerings to include high-demand computing programmes such as BSc (Hons) Computer Science, BSc (Hons) Cyber Security, MSc Cyber Security, and MSc Artificial Intelligence. This diversification reflected both global trends and regional demand, positioning us to serve a broader spectrum of students.

The impact was immediate. Our student numbers began to climb steadily, with an increasing influx from other emirates. We gained traction among school leavers, working professionals, and expatriate families seeking quality British education closer to home. We also launched initiatives to attract international students who saw the UAE—and RAK in particular—as an affordable and credible alternative to studying in the UK.

Backed by the Home Campus: A Foundation of Trust and Quality

A key driver of our success has been the unwavering support from our home campus in London. From the outset, the University of West London has provided consistent staff training programmes, ensuring our team is equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to uphold the high academic standards of a British institution. Shared curricula, centralised assessment standards, and collaborative training sessions ensure academic parity.

Regular visits by senior leadership—including the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, academic representatives, and colleagues from the UWL Global Partnerships Office—have kept our operations closely aligned with the university’s core values. These visits, coupled with thorough quality inspections and collaborative reviews, have reinforced our commitment to excellence.

This ongoing engagement has fostered a shared sense of purpose and accountability, enabling UWL RAK to grow with confidence while preserving the integrity and reputation of a genuine British education. Academic operations at UWL RAK are closely monitored by the parent campus, and our faculty and academic support teams remain in frequent contact with their counterparts in London to ensure high-quality course delivery and robust student support.

A British Campus with Local Roots

What sets UWL RAK apart is its unique identity as a British university campus grounded in the heart of Ras Al Khaimah. As a branch of the University of West London—an institution with a rich academic heritage in the UK—we carry forward a legacy of quality and innovation in higher education. This commitment was reinforced in 2023 when our operations underwent a thorough review and validation by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), which confirmed that our academic standards align with internationally recognized benchmarks and awarded us a Diamond Rating.

Yet UWL RAK is more than a mirror of its London counterpart. We’ve cultivated a distinctly local character—one that speaks to the needs, aspirations, and ambitions of students in the UAE. From tailored seminars and industry-focused Talk Series to career fairs and open days that engage directly with the local community, our campus is a hub of meaningful educational interaction.

In essence, we are a bridge between two worlds: offering the academic structure and credibility of a British university, while embracing the cultural context, responsiveness, and agility that define the UAE’s dynamic landscape.

Becoming Part of Ras Al Khaimah’s Educational Framework

A major milestone in our journey came in 2024, when UWL RAK was formally brought under the regulatory oversight of the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge (RAK DOK)—a newly established government body tasked with shaping and supervising the emirate’s higher education landscape. This transition was far more than a procedural change; it signified our deeper integration into Ras Al Khaimah’s educational fabric.

Joining the RAK DOK framework brought with it a renewed focus on compliance, continuous academic audits, and alignment with regional goals and standards. For students and their families, this added a new layer of credibility and confidence, reaffirming that their investment in a UWL RAK education was both secure and future-focused.

In March 2025, our commitment to quality and governance was formally recognised with the prestigious RAK DOK Compliance Diamond Rating—a testament to the strength of our academic structures, internal systems, and quality assurance processes. As we continue to evolve, this alignment with local oversight reflects our growing role as a trusted partner in Ras Al Khaimah’s educational vision.

Shaping the Higher Education Landscape in RAK

UWL RAK’s growth has not only changed the choices of students but also the narrative around Ras Al Khaimah as a serious player in the UAE’s higher education sector. By proving that a branch campus can offer world-class education, attract talent from across the country, and retain high academic standards, we’ve set a powerful example. In fact, our success has encouraged other institutions to consider RAK as a strategic base—further enriching the academic landscape of the emirate. What was once a modest beginning has now become a movement: one that aligns with national goals and reflects the UAE’s evolving vision for decentralised, globally competitive education.

Why Students Are Choosing UWL RAK

The decision to pursue higher education is rarely just about academics—it’s also about value, environment, and opportunity. Over the years, UWL RAK has emerged as a compelling choice for students across the Emirates for several key reasons:

• More affordable tuition fees without compromising on quality
• Focused class environments that allow for personalised academic attention
• A calm, distraction-free setting ideal for serious study, away from the pace of major cities
• The prestige of a British degree, earned locally at a fraction of the cost
• Real-world opportunities for internships, placements, research, and student leadership

For students, UWL RAK offers a rare balance between academic excellence and affordability. For families, it brings peace of mind—knowing their children are receiving a globally recognised education in a safe and supportive environment. And for Ras Al Khaimah, it validates a powerful truth: that high-quality, decentralised higher education is not only possible but flourishing.

Looking Ahead: A New Campus, New Possibilities

As we continue to grow, our vision for the future is bold and forward-thinking. Plans are underway for a purpose-built, standalone campus—one that mirrors the scale of our ambition and supports the evolving needs of our academic community. This upcoming facility will feature on-campus student accommodation, expansive lecture theatres, state-of-the-art innovation and computing labs, vibrant student lounges, sports facilities, wellness and fitness spaces—all designed to foster a holistic and engaging university experience.

Alongside physical expansion, we’re actively pursuing accreditation from local authorities for a broader portfolio of programmes. Our academic roadmap includes new offerings in emerging and high-impact fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Business Analytics—areas aligned with global trends and regional workforce needs.

But this next chapter isn’t just about buildings or course catalogues. It’s about elevating the overall quality of education, nurturing deeper research engagement, and establishing UWL RAK as a comprehensive academic institution. Through these efforts, we aim to align closely with the UAE’s Vision 2030 for education—playing our part in shaping a knowledge-driven economy and empowering the next generation of leaders.

The Heart of the Story: Our People

Beyond every statistic—every new course, compliance rating, or growing enrolment figure—lies the true engine of UWL RAK: its people. It’s the faculty who go beyond lectures to mentor, encourage, and inspire. It’s the administrative staff who greet students by name, often becoming the first point of reassurance during moments of doubt. It’s the alumni who return not just with success stories, but with a desire to give back. And it’s the parents who entrust us with their children’s futures, believing in the promise we offer.

Having been part of this journey since the very beginning, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations—students becoming professionals, uncertain applicants growing into confident graduates, and a small team of committed individuals blossoming into a thriving academic community.

This isn’t just an institution. It’s a living, growing community.

Final Thoughts

The story of UWL RAK is still being written. What began as an experiment in a modest building has grown into one of the most dynamic university campuses in Ras Al Khaimah. We’ve challenged assumptions about where world-class education can exist. We’ve created pathways for students who may have otherwise missed out. And we’ve shown that with clarity, consistency, and care, transformation is possible—even in just eight years.

As we look ahead to our next chapter—a larger campus, new courses, deeper local engagement—we carry with us the same spirit we had in 2017: one of belief, resilience, and relentless pursuit of quality.

Because at UWL RAK, we don’t just educate. We evolve.

By: Sajesh Nambiar – Head of Student Recruitment & Admissions, UWL RAK

In 2017, when we welcomed our first cohort of students—just 13 in total—into a modest space inside the RAKEZ Business Zone building, few could have predicted how far we would come in such a short span of time.
